BANDUNG, Indonesia — What began as an ordinary afternoon push through a quiet residential neighborhood turned into a terrifying moment of survival when a street vendor's meatball (bakso) cart suddenly exploded into a massive fireball. The alarming incident, which was caught on local security cameras, highlights the hidden hazards faced by street food operators rely on portable gas canisters for daily cooking.
The incident occurred in the Kompleks Taruna residential area, located in the Ujungberung district of Bandung, West Java. CCTV footage captured the moment the vendor was steadily pushing his traditional wooden food cart past quiet homes.
Without warning, a violent blast ruptured from inside the lower compartment of the cart. Within milliseconds, a bright fireball completely engulfed the cart and the vendor, sending shockwaves, burning debris, and smoke ringing through the narrow street.
Nearby residents rushed outdoors after hearing the loud boom to find the shattered wreckage of the cart and the injured vendor. Community members provided immediate assistance, helping douse remaining flames and comforting the victim while emergency services were summoned.
Medical responders transported the vendor to a nearby medical facility for treatment. Doctors confirmed that the vendor survived the explosion but sustained burn injuries across his face, head, and hands. He remains in stable condition while receiving specialized care for his wounds.
Local police and safety officials inspected the scene to determine the precise cause of the blast. Initial investigations point to a severe gas leak involving a portable LPG cylinder connected to the cart’s stove burner.
Experts suspect that gas accumulated within the enclosed wooden frame of the cart before coming into contact with an open pilot flame, triggering an instantaneous explosion. Authorities have reiterated public safety advisories for mobile food vendors, emphasizing proper ventilation and routine maintenance of portable gas equipment to prevent similar tragedies.
