SOUTH BOUND BROOK, N.J. — A devastating three-alarm fire tore through a residential neighborhood before dawn on Friday, June, 19, 2026 completely destroying a local home and triggering a massive emergency response.
Emergency personnel rushed to Howard Avenue at approximately 3:46 a.m. after receiving urgent 911 calls reporting a fully involved house fire with potential occupants trapped inside.
Upon arrival, South Bound Brook police officers and volunteer firefighters were met with heavy fire conditions as intense flames entirely consumed the property. Crews immediately stretched multiple hose lines to launch an aggressive attack, but the fire spread with such speed and intensity that the residential structure ultimately suffered a total catastrophic collapse while firefighters battled the blaze.
The heat from the inferno was so severe that it also caused minor exterior damage to neighboring homes along the block.
Because the structural fire threatened to spread across the dense neighborhood, a massive mutual aid response was quickly triggered. More than a dozen regional fire companies and emergency squads mobilized to support local operations, including responding fire crews from Bound Brook, Community Fire, Somerset, Somerville, East Franklin, Elizabeth Avenue, Millstone Valley, Middlesex, Finderne, Manville, Martinsville, Middlebush, and Arbor Hose. Essential medical support was also provided by emergency medical personnel from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and the Bradley Gardens Rescue Squad.
Somerset County Prosecutor John P. McDonald, Acting Chief of County Detectives Meredith McKay, and South Bound Brook Police Chief Douglas LaGrua confirmed that at least two people were injured or impacted by the fire. One resident—reported to be a senior citizen—was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. A second resident remains tragically unaccounted for as emergency crews continue to sift through the smoldering ruins.
Additionally, one responding firefighter sustained minor injuries during the chaotic response and was treated at an area hospital before being released.
Detectives from the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Unit and Fire Investigation Unit have been deployed to the scene to assist local officials. The scene remains highly active, and authorities note that the exact origin and cause of the devastating blaze have not yet been determined.
