“Echoes of Battle: Unearthing Norfolk’s Iron Age War Trumpet and Boar Standard”

Archaeologists in west Norfolk have unearthed a rare hoard of Iron Age artefacts, including a near‑complete Celtic war trumpet (carnyx) and a boar’s head military standard, along with shield bosses and other items. The finds, about 2,000 years old, are among the most significant of their kind in Europe and will reshape understanding of Iron Age life and warfare.

“Echoes of Battle: Unearthing Norfolk’s Iron Age War Trumpet and Boar Standard”

In a field in west Norfolk, England, archaeologists have uncovered an extraordinary glimpse into ancient Celtic warfare and ceremony — a near‑complete Iron Age war trumpet alongside a bronze boar’s head standard and other rare artefacts, buried almost 2,000 years ago. The discovery is being described by experts as once‑in‑a‑lifetime and offers a remarkable window into Iron Age society, battle practice and ritual symbolism.

The hoard was unearthed in summer 2025 during a routine archaeological excavation carried out by Pre‑Construct Archaeology as part of planning requirements for new housing development work. At its core is a near‑complete bronze battle trumpet, known as a carnyx, one of only three ever found in Britain and among the most complete yet discovered in Europe. These striking animal‑headed instruments — designed to be held aloft and blown in battle — were used by Celtic tribes across Europe to rally warriors and intimidate enemies with their deep, resonant sound.

Alongside the carnyx is a rare sheet‑bronze boar’s head, believed to have been part of a military standard used in conflict. Boar imagery carried symbolic weight in Iron Age cultures, evoking strength and ferocity — traits coveted by warriors and leaders alike. The hoard also includes five shield bosses (the central metal fittings on shields) and an iron object of as‑yet undetermined purpose.

Because the metalwork is extremely fragile after centuries underground, specialists lifted the objects in a single block of soil and scanned it before beginning delicate conservation work. Historic England, the Norfolk Museums Service and the National Museum of Scotland are coordinating conservation and research. A county coroner will assess whether the hoard should be legally declared treasure this year, which will influence its long‑term ownership and display.

Experts say the hoard likely dates from around 50 BC to AD 50, a period of social and military change in Britain. The location of the find sits within territory historically associated with the Iceni tribe — famously led by Boudicca in her revolt against Roman rule — and some archaeologists consider connections with that wider cultural past an intriguing possibility for future study.

The discovery of the near‑intact carnyx and the boar’s head standard is a rare archaeological event that promises to deepen our understanding of Iron Age warfare, ritual and artistic expression in ancient Britain and Europe. As conservation work continues and scholars begin detailed analysis, the Norfolk hoard is certain to feature in forthcoming research and public exhibitions, reshaping how we imagine life, conflict and ceremony more than two millennia ago.
