“Echoes from Kashmir: How a Man Helped Engineer the Red Fort Blast”

In a case that has shocked New Delhi and reverberated across India, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested a Kashmir resident, whom it alleges played a key role in a deadly car explosion near the historic Red Fort. Authorities say this individual, Amir Rashid Ali, conspired with a suspected “suicide bomber” to orchestrate the attack.

According to the NIA, the vehicle used in the blast was registered in Ali’s name — and he is accused of facilitating its purchase. The agency claims that Ali traveled from Kashmir to Delhi specifically to help acquire the car, which was later converted into a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (IED). Investigators also say they have seized another vehicle belonging to the alleged bomber, Umar Un Nabi.

Forensic analysis, the NIA adds, has confirmed that the person driving the bomb-laden car was Umar Un Nabi — a resident of Pulwama, Kashmir, and an assistant professor in general medicine at a university in Haryana. According to the agency, Nabi died in the blast, marking the event as a suicide bombing.

The death toll in the explosion has been reported at around 12, though numbers vary slightly between sources. In addition to the arrest of Ali, investigators are probing deeper: they are examining possible wider networks, including links to militant groups.

This arrest comes amid larger counterterrorism efforts. As part of the Red Fort blast investigation, the NIA and local police have detained several Kashmir-origin doctors suspected of being part of a “white-collar” support network for militants. Investigators are also probing whether clerics from Kashmir were involved in organizing or motivating the plot.

The case underscores both the human cost of the attack and the complex, cross-state networks investigators believe may have facilitated it. The NIA says it is working in coordination with Delhi Police, Jammu & Kashmir Police, and other agencies.
