Earthquake Shakes Naples: 10 Injured After 4.5 Magnitude Tremor Rattles Southern Italy

NAPLES, Italy — A sharp magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck the densely populated metropolitan area of Naples early on Friday morning, July 31, 2026 sending terrified residents into the streets and leaving at least 10 people injured.

The tremor, centered near the highly active CampiFlegrei volcanic caldera to the west of the city, shook the region at a shallow depth, amplifying the violent shaking felt by millions across southern Italy.

The earthquake struck while many residents were still asleep, triggering widespread panic as buildings swayed and objects fell from shelves. In Pozzuoli, a seaside suburb at the heart of the seismic activity, hundreds of people fled their homes in pajamas, fearing structural collapses.

Emergency services quickly swarmed the region as frantic calls reported cracked walls, fallen masonry, and shattered glass cluttering the streets.

"The shaking was sudden and incredibly violent," said one Pozzuoli resident who evacuated to a local piazza. "We have been dealing with tremors for months, but this one felt entirely different."

Local health authorities confirmed that at least 10 people were treated at nearby hospitals. Most injuries were minor, consisting of lacerations from falling debris, cuts from broken window glass, and contusions sustained during the rush to evacuate. Several individuals were also treated for severe panic attacks.

Following the earthquake, Civil Protection crews immediately deployed across Naples and neighboring municipalities to assess structural integrity. In terms of building damage, officials reported minor structural issues, including cracks in older masonry and detached plaster from historical facades. As a precautionary measure for infrastructure safety, several public schools and administrative buildings were ordered temporarily closed to allow engineers to conduct comprehensive inspections. Additionally, transit disruptions occurred as local rail services experienced brief delays while track safety checks were carried out.

The Naples region, particularly the CampiFlegrei zone, has been gripped by a prolonged period of bradyseism—a phenomenon where the ground gradually rises and falls due to subterranean volcanic activity. The area has seen thousands of minor tremors over the past few years, keeping the local population on high alert.

Seismologists from Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) noted that while this event is one of the strongest recorded in the current seismic cycle, it does not indicate an imminent volcanic eruption. The INGV continues to monitor the situation closely, warning residents that minor aftershocks remain highly likely over the coming days.
