Dutch Riot Police Clash with Far-Right Protesters as Violent Unrest Erupts in The Hague

THE HAGUE, Netherlands — Dutch riot police used water cannons, baton charges, and police dogs to disperse hundreds of far-right protesters in central The Hague after an anti-immigration rally devolved into violent clashes with law enforcement.

The demonstration, organized by the far-right group "Wij zijn het volk" ("We are the people"), brought around 500 protesters to the city's Malieveld park to protest the Dutch government’s asylum and immigration policies. However, local authorities revoked permits and banned a planned march through the city center after demonstrator's pelted officers with fireworks, heavy projectiles, and stones.

Violence escalated rapidly as members of the crowd engaged in provocative behavior, including displaying far-right symbols, chanting anti-Semitic slogans, and making Nazi salutes. Police moved in under an order from municipal authorities to clear the area, making at least 24 arrests for offenses ranging from weapon possession to failing to comply with dispersal orders.

Dutch government officials strongly condemned the unrest. Prime Minister Rob Jetten denounced the demonstrators on social media, accusing them of deliberately seeking violence and chanting "abhorrent" slogans. Justice Minister David van Weel called for an "extremely firm" response to the scenes, commending riot officers for standing up for the democratic rule of law.

The clashes come amid a delicate political backdrop in the Netherlands, reflecting growing polarization over immigration and border controls. Authorities confirmed that investigations into the main instigators remain ongoing as security forces maintain an increased presence in the capital area.

In the aftermath of the violence, clean-up crews worked through the evening to clear debris, shattered glass, and unexploded pyrotechnics from the surrounding streets. Municipal leaders praised emergency personnel for their swift containment of the situation, while local business owners in the downtown area expressed relief that damage to storefronts was kept to a minimum despite the escalating chaos.

Human rights advocacy groups and civil society organizations have voiced deepening concern over the visible resurgence of extremist rhetoric on Dutch streets. As investigators analyze body camera footage and surveillance feeds to identify additional participants, lawmakers from across the political spectrum are facing renewed pressure to address the underlying societal divisions driving such volatile demonstrations.
