Drunk-Driving Rampage in Silchar: 3 Injured, Including Traffic Policeman

SILCHAR, Assam — Three people, including an on-duty traffic police officer, were injured after a speeding vehicle driven by a suspected intoxicated driver rammed into pedestrians and a police checkpoint in Silchar, Assam, on Friday, September 11, 2026.

The high-speed collision occurred along a busy thoroughfare in central Silchar. According to eyewitnesses and local officials, the driver lost control of the vehicle before careening into bystanders and striking the traffic policeman stationed to manage evening transit flow.

Bystanders rushed to assist immediately following the crash as the vehicle came to a halt. Emergency responders arrived shortly after, securing the scene and transporting the three injured individuals to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for urgent care.

Medical staff reported that the traffic constable sustained severe fractures, while the two civilians received treatment for non-life-threatening trauma and abrasions.

Local police intercepted and detained the driver at the scene. Initial breathalyzer tests conducted by responding officers indicated alcohol levels significantly above legal permissible limits.

Authorities have seized the vehicle and registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Motor Vehicles Act, covering reckless driving and driving under the influence. Investigators are reviewing regional CCTV footage to establish the full sequence of events leading up to the impact.

The incident has sparked renewed calls from local transport advocacy groups for stricter enforcement against driving under the influence and higher penalties for repeat traffic offenders across Assam. Community leaders emphasized that robust nighttime patrols and visible enforcement at major intersections are vital to protecting on-duty law enforcement personnel and pedestrians from reckless behavior.

District transport officials announced plans to conduct a comprehensive safety review of urban checkpoints in Silchar, aiming to install enhanced physical barriers and reflective warning signage at high-risk posts. Meanwhile, legal proceedings against the detained driver are moving forward swiftly, with police preparing formal charge sheets to ensure accountability under the law.
