Drones Turn Sudan’s 'Forgotten' War Into a Relentless Civilian Killing Field

Over 80% of civilian deaths in the ongoing conflict in Sudan are now caused by drone strikes, according to the UN, marking a grim phase in the war. This reliance on drones has transformed the situation into a humanitarian crisis, exacerbating food insecurity and limiting humanitarian access.

Drones Turn Sudan’s 'Forgotten' War Into a Relentless Civilian Killing Field

As of May 2026, the conflict in Sudan has reached a critical point where drone warfare has become the leading cause of civilian casualties. According to UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, more than 880 civilians have died due to drone strikes in just the first four months of the year, accounting for over 80% of all conflict-related civilian deaths.

The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have increasingly employed armed drones in their ongoing struggle, leading to widespread devastation. The fatal airstrikes are particularly prevalent in the Kordofan region, where civilian infrastructure, including markets and health facilities, has been repeatedly targeted. For example, a recent drone strike on May 8 reportedly killed 26 individuals in Al Quz and North Kordofan.

The intensification of drone use has rendered prior patterns of the conflict ineffective, as it allows the hostilities to continue unhindered, even as the region approaches the rainy season, which traditionally slows down ground operations. The UN warns that unless immediate measures are taken to curb the use of drones, the conflict risks escalating into an even deadlier phase, leading to further displacement of innocent civilians.

Adding to the urgency, humanitarian operations are now severely disrupted. Many areas in Sudan, including Kordofan, are facing heightened risks of famine and acute food shortages, exacerbated by the ongoing conflict and anticipated supply chain issues due to the Gulf crisis.

Türk has called for urgent international action to prevent further arms transfers to the warring parties, particularly advanced drones that could prolong the violence and civilian targeting. He stressed that accountability is crucial and that attacks on civilians must not be met with impunity, as such actions are becoming increasingly normalized.

The mounting civilian death toll and humanitarian implications paint a bleak picture of a conflict that continues to spiral out of control, drawing the attention of the international community and highlighting the desperate need for diplomatic interventions to protect vulnerable populations in Sudan.
