CONSTANȚA, Romania — A commercial cargo ship carrying a Ukrainian crew sank in the Black Sea off the coast of Romania following a drone attack, leaving one crew member dead and three others missing. The incident marks a dangerous escalation in maritime threats along major commercial shipping corridors on NATO’s eastern flank.
The Comoros-flagged merchant vessel, identified as the Khoryv, was en route from Turkey toward Romania's port of Sulina when it caught fire and capsized approximately 13 nautical miles east of Constanța, outside Romania's territorial waters. The Maritime Rescue Coordination Center received a distress alert around 10:00 a.m. local time after an explosion triggered by an unscrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) struck the ship.
Nearby commercial vessels and Romanian emergency services responded immediately to the distress call. Out of the 13 crew members on board, ten were pulled from the water—nine alive and one deceased. Search-and-rescue teams continue to scan the surrounding area for the three missing seafarers, though operations have been hampered by low visibility and rough sea conditions.
The sinking comes amid a sharp rise in drone strikes targeting commercial shipping routes in the western Black Sea. Local maritime authorities and European leaders have expressed growing concern over the safety of international waters, with Bucharest placing responsibility on Russian forces for expanding hazardous military activities near NATO territory.
In response to the growing disruption to international trade routes, regional defense officials and NATO partners have increased air policing, radar surveillance, and maritime patrols across the region to protect commercial vessels navigating the Black Sea. Search and recovery efforts remain ongoing as investigators assess the full circumstances of the attack.
As international concern mounts, maritime transport associations have called for immediate security measures to protect commercial shipping routes and safeguard seafarers operating in the Black Sea. Industry analysts warn that persistent attacks on merchant vessels could push marine insurance premiums to unprecedented highs, severely disrupting key agricultural and energy supply chains across Eastern Europe. Meanwhile, Romanian naval units and neighboring Allied forces remain on high alert, maintaining active surveillance in the area to deter further strikes against civil shipping.
