Driver Flees Scene After Explosive Truck Crash Leaves Two Injured on Lantau Island

HONG KONG — Police have launched a manhunt for a commercial vehicle operator who fled the scene on foot after his heavy goods vehicle crashed and exploded into flames along the North Lantau Highway early Saturday morning, August 15, 2026.

The fiery collision occurred around 3:15 a.m. near the Tung Chung Eastern Interchange as the 16-tonne truck, carrying electronic freight towards Hong Kong International Airport, skidded along the slick roadway during an active amber rainstorm warning.

According to preliminary police reports, the truck skidded out of control, smashing through eight meters of metal crash barriers before sliding nearly 30 meters down the highway. Within moments of coming to a halt on the shoulder, the vehicle erupted into a massive blaze, sending thick plumes of black smoke and audible explosions into the night sky.

Flying debris and structural metal fragments from the high-speed impact struck a taxi traveling directly behind the heavy goods vehicle. The secondary impact lightly injured the 32-year-old male cab driver and his 27-year-old male passenger.

"Fierce flames and heavy smoke engulfed the vehicle instantly. Fire crews arrived quickly to douse the blaze, but the truck driver had already vanished from the roadway."— Hong Kong Emergency Responders

Firefighters extinguished the inferno and confirmed that no individuals were trapped inside the scorched wreckage. Investigations revealed that the driver briefly contacted his employer and a co-worker to report the crash before disconnecting his phone and abandoning the site without explanation.

The injured taxi driver was transported to North Lantau Hospital for outpatient medical evaluation, while his passenger declined further treatment. The Transport Department cordoned off multiple airport-bound lanes on the North Lantau Highway for several hours to facilitate wreckage removal and highway cleanup, causing extensive morning traffic delays. Officers from the New Territories South traffic investigation unit are actively searching for the missing driver to clarify the cause of the crash.
