WALLSEND, Australia — An 18-year-old driver has been taken into police custody after a vehicle struck multiple spectators gathered near Wallsend to celebrate the Newcastle Knights ahead of their upcoming rugby league match, turning a moment of community excitement into a chaotic emergency.

Hundreds of energetic supporters had lined the street in Wallsend, a suburb of Newcastle, to cheer on the Newcastle Knights as the team bus made its departure. The enthusiastic send-off abruptly turned into a scene of panic when a sedan drove into the crowd gathered along the roadside.

Witnesses at the scene reported hearing the vehicle’s engine revving moments before it lost control and mounted the pavement where families, children, and long-time fans were standing.

"He was revving the car, he was excited, he was a supporter... Somehow he lost control of the car, and he's gone into the crowd," local officials stated following the crash.

Emergency responders flooded the street within minutes, deploying a fleet of ambulances and rescue personnel to treat victims scattered along the roadside.

At least 10 people required urgent medical transportation to local hospitals. Health authorities confirmed that two victims, including a young child, suffered critical injuries and remain under intensive medical care. Several others, including additional children, were treated for minor to moderate injuries and remain in stable condition.

Paramedics set up a mobile triage point along the sealed-off roadway to treat walking wounded and support shocked eyewitnesses before emergency transports could be completed.

New South Wales Police immediately arrested the 18-year-old driver at the scene. He was escorted under guard for mandatory blood and alcohol testing as crash investigation units surveyed the site to reconstruct the events leading up to the collision.

Authorities confirmed that early indications point to reckless driving and loss of control rather than an intentional act of violence or terrorism. Charges are expected to be laid as police complete their initial interviews and technical forensic analysis.

Meanwhile, local community leaders have expressed deep sorrow over the event, arranging support services and counseling for witnesses and affected family members as the region recovers from the tragedy.
