Drink-Driving Suspected In Fatal Kuala Lumpur Crash That Leaves One Dead, One Hospitalized, Police Say

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia— One person died and another was injured in a suspected drink-driving crash in Kuala Lumpur early on November 1, 2026, prompting police to arrest the driver at the scene.

The crash happened around 2:15 a.m. on a main road near the city center. The car, a sedan traveling at high speed, lost control, hit a divider, and then slammed into a motorcycle parked on the shoulder. The impact threw two people onto the roadway.

Police said the motorcycle rider died instantly. His passenger, a woman, suffered broken legs and was taken to Kuala Lumpur Hospital. The car driver, a man in his 30s, was unhurt but failed a roadside breath test.

"The driver smelled of alcohol. His breath test was over the legal limit. We have detained him for further investigation," a Kuala Lumpur Traffic Police officer said near the cordon. Blood samples were taken for lab testing.

Drink-driving crashes spike late at night in Kuala Lumpur, especially on weekends. Police run frequent roadblocks, but enforcement is stretched. The city recorded 42 drink-driving fatalities last year, according to official data.

Witnesses at a nearby 24-hour eatery said the sedan was weaving before the crash. One said the engine was revving loudly. CCTV from a petrol station captured the car passing at high speed seconds before impact.

Fire and Rescue crews washed blood and fuel from the road. The sedan's front was crushed. The motorcycle was broken in two. Both vehicles were towed for forensic inspection.

The dead victim was identified as a delivery rider in his 20s. His family arrived at the hospital morgue Saturday morning. The injured woman is reported stable after surgery.

The suspect is expected to be charged under Section 44 of the Road Transport Act for driving under the influence causing death. That charge carries up to 10 years in prison. He remains in custody at the Dang Wangi police station.

Police said the road reopened at 5 a.m. after debris was cleared. They appealed for dashcam footage from drivers in the area.
