A hand-drawn survey of the Mason-Dixon Line, completed by Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon in 1768, sold for $950,000 at Brunk Auctions in Asheville, North Carolina. Forty-five bidders competed for the document, whose bidding opened at $400,000. The survey was commissioned to settle a colonial boundary dispute between Maryland and Pennsylvania, not to divide North and South. It later became associated with the separation of free and slave states after its use in the 1820 Missouri Compromise. Its buyer has chosen to remain anonymous.
