“Disruptive” passenger restrained on Jet2 flight to Manchester dies

A man who was restrained on a Jet2 flight by fellow travellers after he allegedly assaulted another passenger and cabin crew has died, police said.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said officers were called shortly before 02:30 BST on Monday to reports of a man behaving aggressively on the inbound flight from Larnaca to Manchester. They said the man had assaulted another customer and a member of cabin crew and that he was “disruptive and aggressive.”

When the aircraft landed at Manchester Airport, passengers and aircrew restrained him at the rear of the plane. GMP said officers boarded, used handcuffs to detain him, and quickly found he was unresponsive. Officers provided first aid and started CPR before taking him to hospital.

The man, named by reports as Callum Kerr, died on Tuesday. An investigation into what happened is under way. GMP said it made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) because officers had come into contact with him before his death. The IOPC said its investigation will look at the actions and decision-making of the officers involved, while a separate GMP investigation considers the actions of members of the public involved.
