ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — A solemn holiday turned into widespread devastation when a massive fire broke out in Bagong Dalan, Barangay Tugbungan, during the observance of All Saints' Day, leaving approximately 1,000 families homeless.
The blaze ignited during the late hours of the holiday, quickly spreading through dense residential structures and destroying hundreds of light-material homes within minutes.
According to preliminary reports from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the fire began deep within the residential neighborhood of Bagong Dalan. Driven by strong winds and exacerbated by narrow access roads, the flames rapidly engulfed row after row of closely built houses.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as families, who were observing All Saints' Day with relatives, rushed back to save whatever belongings they could salvage. Thick black smoke filled the sky as residents formed bucket brigades alongside firefighters to slow the advancing wall of fire.
Emergency personnel faced significant challenges navigating the congested alleys, requiring multiple fire units from neighboring districts and volunteer brigades to bring the massive inferno under control.
Firefighters spent several hours battling the blaze before finally declaring it under control. While emergency responders conducted search-and-cooling operations through the charred ruins, local officials confirmed that no immediate fatalities had been reported, though several residents and firefighters received treatment for smoke inhalation and minor injuries.
Local government authorities, led by the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), immediately activated emergency relief protocols. Local public schools and community centers have been converted into temporary evacuation centers to shelter the displaced families.
Social workers are distributing emergency relief packs containing food, clean drinking water, sleeping mats, and hygiene kits to the fire victims.
The Bureau of Fire Protection has launched a thorough investigation to determine the origin and exact cause of the fire. Preliminary assessments point to potential electrical failure or unattended open flames from holiday gatherings, though official confirmation remains pending.
Zamboanga City officials have appealed to public and private organizations for additional assistance, including building materials and basic necessities, to support the long-term recovery of the affected families as they rebuild their lives after the tragedy.
