Disaster in the Alps: 5 Dead, 40 Injured as Dutch Tour Bus Overturns in Switzerland

SUSCH, Switzerland — A tragic mountain transit accident in the Swiss Alps left five people dead and 40 others injured early on Friday morning, September 11, 2026 after a double-decker Dutch tour bus lost control on a winding alpine pass and overturned.

The fatal crash occurred shortly after 6:00 a.m. local time along the Flüela Pass road near the municipality of Susch in the Canton of Grisons. According to the Graubünden Cantonal Police, the coach was carrying a party of Dutch vacationers toward a regional ski resort town when the vehicle failed to navigate a sharp hair-pin turn, struck a concrete barrier, and flipped onto its side along the steep embankment.

Swiss emergency services initiated a massive rescue response, deploying multiple air ambulance helicopters, alpine rescue teams, fire crews, and fleet ambulances to the remote mountain location. First responders used specialized stabilization gear to secure the overturned vehicle before extracting passengers trapped within the upper deck of the coach.

Local medical authorities confirmed five fatalities at the scene. Of the 40 surviving passengers, 12 sustained serious injuries and were airlifted to regional trauma centers in Chur and St. Gallen, while 28 others were treated at local hospitals for minor injuries and severe shock.

The Flüela Pass route was completely closed to all vehicular traffic in both directions to allow emergency crews to complete rescue operations and clean up fuel spills. Federal traffic safety inspectors alongside cantonal police forensic experts have launched a joint investigation into the cause of the rollover, focusing on brake systems, road surface ice, and potential driver error on the high-altitude gradient.

The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed it has dispatched consular officers to the canton to support victims' families and assist local authorities with identification procedures. Meanwhile, Swiss transport officials indicated that weather conditions along the pass were deteriorating at the time of the crash, prompting fresh debates over whether seasonal alpine routes should implement stricter mandatory speed limits and earlier autumn closures for heavy commercial vehicles.
