Disaster in Cape Verde: Bus Carrying Schoolchildren Plunges Into 100ft Ravine on Fogo Island, Killing at Least 20

SÃO FILIPE, Cape Verde — At least 21 people have been killed and numerous others severely injured after a passenger bus carrying secondary school students veered off a mountain road and plunged nearly 30 meters down a steep, volcanic ravine on the island of Fogo late on Saturday, September 5, 2026.

The disaster occurred along the winding highland route connecting Chã das Caldeiras and Campanas de Cima in the northern sector of the São Filipe municipality. According to local civil protection officials and emergency responders, the vehicle lost control on a treacherous stretch of road, plunging roughly 100 feet down a rocky embankment before coming to a rest in a remote crater valley. Most of those aboard were young people, primarily secondary school students returning from a private weekend excursion. The driver was among those confirmed dead at the scene.

Emergency rescue operations faced extreme challenges due to Fogo’s steep terrain, dark conditions, and limited specialized equipment. Local residents joined first responders, municipal police, and health workers in retrieving victims from the wrecked airframe and transporting critically injured passengers to São Filipe’s Regional Hospital. Authorities warned that the casualty count could rise further as medical teams work to stabilize several survivors in intensive care.

Cabo Verdean President José Maria Neves expressed profound sorrow over the tragic loss of young lives, offering condolences to the affected families and promising government mobilization to assist survivors and relatives. Transport and law enforcement authorities have initiated a formal investigation to determine whether mechanical failure, brake failure on the steep descent, or adverse road conditions contributed to the fatal crash.

In response to the tragedy, the Cape Verdean government declared a three-day period of national mourning, with flags flown at half-mast across all public buildings and diplomatic missions worldwide. National transport authorities have also announced immediate safety audits for all commercial passenger vehicles operating along steep mountain routes, while regional leaders urge for structural guardrails and improved lighting to be installed along the notoriously hazardous Fogo highland corridors.
