DHS Pausing TSA PreCheck and Global Entry Programs Amid Funding Lapse

The Department of Homeland Security has announced a temporary suspension of its TSA PreCheck and Global Entry programs due to a lapse in funding that began on February 14, 2026. The decision, confirmed by DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin, will take effect at 6 a.m. ET on Sunday.

These programs allow pre-vetted travelers expedited processing through airport security checkpoints and U.S. border crossing points. However, amidst ongoing negotiations in Congress regarding funding for the DHS, officials have prioritized the general traveling public, resulting in longer wait times for all travelers.

Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem criticized congressional Democrats for the funding impasse, stating that it compromises national security and places significant strain on DHS personnel. "Shutdowns have serious real-world consequences," she said, stressing the importance of sufficient funding for staff and resources.

In addition to suspending these expedited programs, the DHS has redirected personnel from TSA and Customs and Border Protection to assist with processing regular travelers. This has raised concerns about lengthy lines and delayed processing at airports, notably as the spring break travel rush approaches.

Furthermore, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will halt non-disaster-related responses to focus on ongoing disaster management amid severe winter storms affecting large parts of the United States.

The suspension of TSA PreCheck and Global Entry is a rare move, marking a significant change from previous government shutdowns where these programs remained operational. Criticism arose from various channels, including U.S. Travel, a non-profit representing the travel industry, highlighting that travelers should not be punished due to political disputes.

As negotiations continue, the impact on travelers remains a pressing concern, particularly as delays in processing can lead to heightened frustration among the public, with many already expressing dissatisfaction over potential long waits at airports.
