NAGQU, Tibet — A powerful 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck northern Tibet late Thursday evening, October 22, 2026 killing at least 16 people, injuring dozens more, and reducing hundreds of homes to rubble.
The epicenter was registered at a depth of 18 kilometers, located in a high-altitude, mountainous region approximately 180 to 190 kilometers northeast of Nagqu City and roughly 300 kilometers north of Tibet’s capital, Lhasa. Tremors were felt broadly across the Tibetan plateau, causing widespread panic as residents rushed into the streets in sub-freezing temperatures.
According to initial reports from local emergency management authorities, at least 16 fatalities have been confirmed, with more than 60 individuals treated for injuries. Emergency services reported that at least 11 people remain in critical condition with severe trauma.
The structural impact across remote rural townships has been significant. During the initial shock and subsequent aftershocks, over 330 residential structures and dozens of livestock sheds collapsed. The disaster also severely damaged local administrative offices, power grids, and roadways, briefly severing communication lines to outlying villages. Additionally, train services passing through affected sectors were temporarily suspended while engineers inspected tracks and bridge foundations for potential shifts or fractures.
In the immediate aftermath of the quake, emergency authorities activated a Level II emergency response protocol. More than 300 police officers, firefighters, and medical personnel were immediately dispatched to navigate the high-altitude terrain and spearhead search-and-rescue operations.
Rescue crews are searching through collapsed masonry and heavy debris for survivors. Chinese leadership called for an "all-out effort" in the deployment of rescue units, medical aid, and emergency supplies to protect displaced residents from freezing overnight temperatures, with intermittent snow forecast across the regional highlands over the next three days.
Thousands of temporary shelters and emergency tents are being transported to the region to house thousands of evacuated residents as search efforts continue through the night.
