SIWAN, India — A powerful explosion triggered by illegally stored firecrackers completely destroyed a residential home in Bihar’s Siwan district on Friday, October 23, 2026 killing at least five people and leaving three others severely injured. The violent blast reduced the multi-room structure to rubble and sent shockwaves through the surrounding neighborhood.
Emergency response personnel, local police, and rescue teams rushed to the site shortly after neighbors reported a deafening bang followed by thick plumes of smoke.
The incident occurred in a densely populated village within the district, where firecrackers were reportedly being manufactured and stored inside a private residence ahead of upcoming festive celebrations. According to witnesses, a sudden fire broke out near the storage area, igniting the stock of pyrotechnics and triggering a massive chain explosion.
The force of the blast was so severe that the building collapsed almost instantly, burying occupants under heavy concrete slabs and brick debris. Windows of adjacent houses were shattered, and local residents scrambled to clear the rubble with their bare hands before heavy machinery arrived.
First responders extracted eight people from the collapse site. Five individuals were pronounced dead at the scene due to fatal burn injuries and severe trauma from falling debris.
The three survivors, all suffering from extensive burn injuries and fractures, were rushed to the district hospital in Siwan, where two remain in critical condition. Medical authorities noted that specialized treatment may require transferring the victims to a super-specialty facility in Patna.
Senior administration and police officials inspected the site to assess the damage and oversee rescue efforts. Preliminary investigations suggest that the house was being used as an illegal unit for firecracker fabrication without proper safety permits or adherence to hazard protocols.
"A thorough investigation is underway to determine the precise cause of the ignition," stated a senior local official. Authorities confirmed that forensic experts and bomb disposal squads have been deployed to analyze chemical samples from the site, and legal action will be taken against those operating the unlicensed facility.
