HANDWARA — A massive fire broke out late in the evening in the Magam area of Handwara, completely destroying a residential house and causing significant damage to several adjacent apple trees.
According to local reports, the fire originated from inside the multi-story residential structure before rapidly spreading due to strong wind conditions and dry wooden framework. Smoke billowed high into the sky, prompting panicked calls for help as neighboring families rushed to the scene with buckets of water and makeshift equipment to contain the blazes.
Fire and Emergency Services were immediately dispatched to the location, but by the time fire tenders reached the spot, the residence was already fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters, working alongside courageous local residents, managed to douse the roaring inferno after a grueling effort, preventing the flames from spreading further into adjacent residential structures.
Despite their swift intervention, the house was reduced to ashes, resulting in substantial financial losses for the affected family, who lost all their personal belongings, furniture, and valuables. Additionally, the heat and flames scorched several surrounding apple trees, dealing a harsh economic blow to the household's agricultural livelihood.
Local authorities and police personnel arrived shortly after to assess the damage and secure the area. While no loss of human life or injuries was reported in the incident, the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, though a short circuit is currently suspected. Community members have appealed to the district administration to urgently provide immediate financial assistance and relief to the victimized family.
In response to the tragedy, civil society groups and local social activists visited the site to offer moral support and distribute basic temporary relief materials, including blankets, essential foodstuffs, and clothing to the displaced family. They highlighted that because the household lost both its shelter and part of its seasonal fruit yield, immediate interim aid from local charitable organizations is vital while official compensation is processed.
Revenue officials have since commenced a comprehensive loss assessment report to formally quantify the structural and agricultural damages incurred during the blaze. Senior administrative representatives assured the affected family that their case would be processed under emergency relief guidelines to help expedite temporary housing arrangements and financial rehabilitation.
