Devastating Base Explosion Leaves 10 to 15 Dead in Bolivia

VIACHA, Bolivia — Between 10 and 15 people are confirmed dead and more than 60 others injured following a series of massive explosions at a military barracks in Viacha, located approximately 30 kilometers (19 miles) outside La Paz.

The blasts erupted around 2:30 p.m. local time on Saturday, September 5, 2026 inside a defense ministry facility utilized for storing pyrotechnic materials. Shockwaves from the initial blast shattered windows across surrounding residential neighborhoods, sending debris flying through nearby streets and injuring dozens of local civilians, mostly from flying glass.

Emergency response teams, including ambulances, municipal police, and fire crews, rushed to the scene to treat victims and manage evacuations. Viacha Health Director Rita Nebraska confirmed that at least 14 severely wounded individuals—including a young girl suffering from third-degree burns—were transferred to specialized hospitals in La Paz.

Authorities issued an urgent safety cordon around the military complex. Firefighters warned that residual heat sources inside the storage area pose a continuous risk of secondary detonations, prompting officials to order all residents to maintain a perimeter distance of at least 150 meters.

Deputy Minister of Defense Ernesto JustinianoUrenda stated that an official investigation is underway to determine the cause of the ignition, evaluate safety protocols regarding the stored pyrotechnic inventory, and account for missing persons.

The disaster has reignited intense local debate surrounding the proximity of military storage depots to densely populated urban zones. Community leaders in Viacha expressed frustration, calling on national authorities to permanently relocate munitions and hazardous military stockpiles away from residential communities to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

In response to the tragedy, municipal government offices announced a temporary pause on non-essential public activities, establishing support centers to coordinate humanitarian relief, temporary housing, and medical assistance for displaced families. Government officials assured the public that full compensation and rebuilding support will be provided to residents whose homes sustained structural damage from the violent shockwaves.
