Detained 5-Year-Old Immigrant is Depressed and Lethargic, Texas Congressman Says in Demanding Boy’s Release

Five-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos, currently held at a detention center in Texas, is suffering from depression and lethargy, according to U.S. Representative Joaquin Castro. After visiting Liam and his father, Adrian Conejo Arias, on January 28, 2026, Castro stated that Liam has been asking for his mother and classmates, expressing a desire to return to school. His condition has raised alarms among lawmakers and child welfare advocates.

Liam and his father were detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) earlier this month in Minnesota, a situation that quickly garnered media attention after photos of Liam in his Spider-Man backpack and blue beanie hat went viral. While the Department of Homeland Security claims they entered the U.S. illegally in 2024, the family maintains they sought asylum through legal channels.

Congressman Castro described Liam as “not looking well” during the visit, noting that the boy had not been eating properly and was spending much of his time sleeping. These alarming indicators of distress prompted Castro and fellow lawmakers to demand the child’s release, citing an inhumane detention system that detrimentally affects young children.
