Deep-Sea Tremor: 6.1-Magnitude Earthquake Rocks Southern Italy

ROME, Italy — A powerful earthquake measuring between 6.1 and 6.2 on the magnitude scale struck off the coast of Italy’s southern Calabria region in the early hours of Tuesday, June 2, 2026.

The tremor occurred at approximately 00:12 a.m. local time. According to Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the epicenter was located in the Tyrrhenian Sea, near the town of Paola, at a significant depth of approximately 250 kilometers.

Due to the extreme depth of the quake, the impact on the surface is believed to be limited, and authorities have noted that such deep-seated seismic events often result in less surface destruction than shallower quakes.

Although the earthquake's epicenter was deep beneath the seabed, the resulting tremors were felt across a broad area of Southern Italy. The shaking was most noticeable in Calabria, the region located closest to the epicenter. Furthermore, tremors reached as far north as Naples, with residents in the Vesuvius and Phlegraean areas reporting significant movement. Local reports also confirmed that the earthquake was felt widely across the southern regions of Basilicata, Sicily, and Puglia.

As of Tuesday morning, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or major material damage. Italy's fire department, the Vigili del Fuoco, confirmed shortly after the event that no requests for rescue operations had been received.

Verification and assessment operations remain ongoing as experts continue to monitor the seismically active region.
