Decisive Blow: U.S. Military Strike Kills Elusive Tren de Aragua Gang Leader 'Niño Guerrero'

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a dramatic development in global counter-cartel operations, President Donald Trump announced that a U.S. military airstrike successfully eliminated Héctor Rusthenford Guerrero Flores, the notorious and elusive leader of the Venezuela-based transnational gang Tren de Aragua. Guerrero Flores, widely known by his alias "Niño Guerrero," was targeted earlier this week at a fortified gang compound located in Venezuela's Bolívar state.

According to statements released by the White House and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, the high-stakes operation was executed by the United States Southern Command. President Trump shared a declassified, top-down video of the strike on Truth Social, which captured the moment a projectile directly impacted a small building with a green roof, causing it to instantly erupt in flames.

"At my direction, the United States Southern Command delivered a swift and lethal kinetic strike to successfully execute Niño Guerrero, the infamous leader of Tren de Aragua, one of the most bloodthirsty terrorist organizations on Planet Earth," President Trump stated.

The operation was conducted in close cooperation and intelligence-sharing with Venezuelan security services. Venezuela’s communications ministry later confirmed that local forces engaged in intense clashes with criminal elements during the combined operation, during which Guerrero was successfully "neutralized".

Defense Secretary Hegseth praised the joint action, noting on X that the mission highlights a "shared U.S. and Venezuelan commitment to take the fight to narco-terrorists and deny them any safe haven in our hemisphere".

For over a decade, the 43-year-old Guerrero Flores operated as the undisputed kingpin of Tren de Aragua. He famously expanded the gang's empire from inside the lawless Tocorón prison in Venezuela, transforming the facility into a luxurious, self-governed criminal headquarters complete with a private zoo, pool, and concrete bunkers.

Following a spectacular prison escape in September 2023, Guerrero went underground to expand Tren de Aragua's global empire by weaponizing the South American migrant crisis. Under his shadow rule, the syndicate established multi-million-dollar networks specializing in human trafficking, extortion, contract killings across the Andean corridor, and transnational drug distribution and money laundering stretching from Panama to Brazil and into North America.

Late last year, a New York federal court indicted Guerrero on extensive charges of racketeering conspiracy, providing material support to terrorists, and narcotics distribution. The U.S. State Department had previously placed a $5 million bounty on his head.

The kinetic strike represents a massive victory for the administration, which designated Tren de Aragua as a Foreign Terrorist Organization last year and has repeatedly blamed the group for a wave of organized retail theft and violent crime plaguing major U.S. cities.

In his address, President Trump framed the strike as direct justice for American families, explicitly naming victims of migrant-linked violent crime whose tragedies fueled national border security debates.

"Tren de Aragua terrorists no longer have safe haven in Venezuela or anywhere else," Trump wrote. "Under my leadership, we will find these vicious murderers and drug lords anytime, anyplace, and send them to the depths of hell where they belong".
