CHABANY, Ukraine — A morning commute turned tragic on Tuesday, October 20, 2026 when a Russian drone strike targeted a section of the vital Kyiv–Odesa highway (M05) in the town of Chabany, just outside the Ukrainian capital. The attack left three people dead and four others wounded after setting multiple vehicles ablaze directly adjacent to a local shopping center.
The strike occurred during peak travel hours, impacting civilians traveling along one of the primary transport corridors extending south from Kyiv. Officials described the victims as ordinary commuters on their way to work and daily routines when the blast struck the busy roadway.
Emergency crews and first responders rushed to the scene shortly after the explosion was reported. Firefighters immediately worked to extinguish flames consuming at least two passenger cars that caught fire upon impact.
Authorities promptly cordoned off the affected stretch of the Kyiv–Odesa highway in the Fastiv district, restricting traffic to ensure safety and allow forensic experts to examine the area.
"An enemy drone attack resulted in an impact near the Kyiv–Odesa highway in the village of Chabany, close to a shopping centre," the Kyiv region's prosecution service stated. "Preliminary reports indicate that three people have been killed and four others injured."
Investigators from the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) alongside regional prosecutors arrived at the site to document damage, analyze drone fragments, and gather evidence.
Under the supervision of the Kyiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, Ukrainian authorities have officially launched a pre-trial investigation into potential violations of the laws and customs of war.
Local authorities have once again called on international partners to bolster air defense coverage surrounding key infrastructure and residential hubs, pointing to the incident as another stark reminder of the ongoing danger facing civilians in the capital region. Meanwhile, municipal crews are working around the clock to clear wreckage and repair damaged roadway infrastructure, with local officials expecting full traffic flow along the M05 highway to be restored once safety inspections are complete.
