Berlin, Germany—A high-speed chain-reaction crash involving six vehicles on a unrestricted segment of the Autobahn killed two drivers and tied up regional traffic for over eight hours on Sunday morning.
The collision unfolded around 7:30 a.m. when an executive sedan traveling at high speed struck the rear of a dense cluster of slower-moving traffic during sudden localized fog. The initial impact triggered a cascade of collisions, pinning two vehicles against the central concrete barrier.
Emergency rescue units used hydraulic cutting tools to extract two motorists trapped inside crushed cabins, but medical officers pronounced both victims dead at the scene from severe trauma. Three other drivers were treated for minor injuries and shock at regional clinics.
Automobile wreckage and engine parts were scattered across more than two hundred meters of three westbound traffic lanes, forcing highway police to shut down the corridor completely. Traffic backlogs quickly stretched over twelve kilometers as detour routes struggled to absorb the overflow.
Collision reconstruction specialists used drone scanning systems and ground lasers to map skid trajectories and impact points before clearing crews could begin towed removal of the wrecked vehicles. Preliminary telemetry suggests brake response times were severely hindered by reduced visibility.
"The speed differential between lane movements created a scenario where drivers behind had zero stopping distance when visibility dropped," said Autobahn patrol chief Klaus Weber at the scene. "Vehicles behind were slamming into the wreckage before they even saw the hazard lights."
Transportation safety groups reiterated calls for temporary variable speed limits along sectors prone to rapid micro-climate fog banks, citing an uptick in high-speed pileups during autumn transitions. Federal transport officials declined to comment on pending policy shifts while the police report is finalized.
Highways crews completed asphalt scraping and fluid cleanup around 4:00 p.m., allowing highway authorities to open two lanes under restricted speed advisories while guardrail repairs continue.
