SINGAPORE — A fatal traffic accident involving a heavy trailer truck along the Kranji Expressway (KJE) left one person dead and caused massive morning congestion. The collision occurred near the Woodlands exit during peak morning commute hours.
Emergency services were alerted to the scene along the KJE in the direction leading toward the Woodlands exit. First responders from the Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF) arrived shortly after to find a blue trailer truck positioned across the affected lanes.
Despite rapid intervention by paramedics, one individual involved in the crash sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
"Traffic came to an abrupt halt right near the exit," an eyewitness reported. "Officers and recovery personnel quickly cordoned off the area while managing the growing gridlock."
Land Transport Authority (LTA) traffic marshals and police officers cordoned off multiple lanes to facilitate emergency operations and clear vehicle debris. The partial road closure triggered severe tailbacks extending along the expressway, significantly delaying morning commuters travelling toward northern industrial estates and residential sectors.
Electronic highway signage updated drivers on the delay, advising motorists to seek alternative routes via the Bukit Timah Expressway (BKE) and local arterial roads.
Authorities have launched an investigation to establish the cause of the crash. Traffic police are examining vehicle telemetry, reviewing expressway camera footage, and interviewing witnesses to determine the sequence of events preceding the incident.
Police urge anyone with dash cam footage or further information regarding the crash to contact traffic authorities to assist with ongoing investigations.
The incident has renewed calls from road safety advocates for heightened caution and stricter speed enforcement along major expressways during peak commuting hours. Transport experts emphasize that heavy vehicles require significantly longer braking distances, making early vigilance and maintaining safe trailing gaps essential to preventing similar catastrophic collisions in high-density traffic zones.
