LUDHIANA, India — One person was killed after a massive fire broke out inside a warehouse in the crowded Field Gunj area of Ludhiana, triggering panic across the commercial neighborhood.
The blaze started suddenly inside the facility, where highly combustible goods and materials were stored, allowing the flames to spread rapidly throughout the multi-story structure. Thick plumes of black smoke billowed into the sky, visible from several kilometers away, as neighboring residents and shopkeepers rushed to evacuate the vicinity.
Fire tenders and emergency responders from local fire stations were immediately dispatched to the scene. Firefighters faced significant challenges controlling the raging inferno due to the narrow lanes of Field Gunj, which hindered the access of heavy firefighting equipment and water tankers. Teams battled the flames for several hours to contain the fire and prevent it from jumping to adjacent residential and commercial buildings.
During search-and-rescue operations inside the charred premises, emergency crews located one victim, who was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared dead upon arrival. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released, as authorities work to notify next of kin.
Preliminary reports suggest that an electrical short circuit may have sparked the fire, though police and forensic teams have launched an official investigation to establish the precise cause. Local authorities are also inspecting whether the facility met standard safety protocols and possessed valid fire safety clearances.
In response to the tragic incident, municipal authorities have ordered an immediate safety audit of commercial structures across Field Gunj. Teams of building inspectors and fire safety officials will conduct door-to-door evaluations to identify unauthorized warehouses operating without proper fire suppression systems or emergency exits in the densely packed market area.
Local business associations have expressed shock over the loss of life and called on the government to upgrade emergency response infrastructure in older commercial districts. Shop owners emphasized that overhead electrical wiring and congested lanes continue to pose severe hazards during emergencies, urging city planners to implement long-term solutions to ensure public safety.
