Deadly IED Blast in Upper South Waziristan Leaves Peace Committee Member Dead, 8 Injured

PESHAWAR — A member of a local peace committee was killed and eight others were injured when an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) detonated in a busy market in Upper South Waziristan on Friday afternoon, August 28, 2026.

The explosion occurred in the heart of the Rustam Bazaar area, where local shoppers and shopkeepers had gathered. Security officials reported that the bomb was remotely detonated as the vehicle of local peace committee leader, Malik Saidullah Khan, passed through the main thoroughfare. The force of the blast tore through nearby stalls, shattering storefront windows and destroying multiple vehicles parked in the vicinity.

Emergency response teams, supported by local residents and security forces, rushed to the scene to transport the victims to the District Headquarter Hospital (DHQ) in Wana. Hospital officials confirmed the death of Saidullah Khan upon arrival, noting that three of the eight injured individuals remain in critical condition with severe shrapnel wounds.

Police and paramilitary forces quickly cordoned off the entire market area, launching a targeted search-and-sweep operation to trace the perpetrators. Security checkpoints across Upper South Waziristan have been placed on high alert as forensic teams gather evidence from the blast site to determine the precise composition of the explosive device.

No group has immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. However, local peace committee members in the region have long been targeted by militant groups due to their opposition to insurgent activities and their collaboration with security forces to maintain regional stability in the tribal belt.

In the wake of the targeted strike, tribal elders and community leaders held an emergency jirga in Wana to condemn the violence and demand enhanced protection for civic officials. Local authorities have promised a thorough investigation, while additional frontier corps contingents were deployed to reinforce patrols along major transit corridors to prevent potential follow-up attacks by insurgent networks operating along the border area.
