Deadly Highway Multi-Vehicle Pileup: 5 Dead, 18 Injured on Enugu-Onitsha Expressway

ENUGU, Nigeria — A horrifying multi-vehicle crash along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway claimed the lives of five people and left 18 others critically injured on Thursday morning, September 3, 2026 prompting emergency responses and temporarily paralyzing traffic along the vital interstate corridor.

The devastating pileup involved a heavy-duty trailer, a fully loaded commercial passenger bus, and a private saloon car near a notoriously dangerous stretch of the highway.

According to preliminary reports from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the incident unfolded when the driver of the trailer reportedly lost control of the vehicle due to excessive speed and a sudden mechanical brake failure while navigating a bend.

The unguided trailer swerved violently into oncoming lanes, broadsiding the passenger bus before crashing into the trailing saloon car. The violent collision reduced the bus to a mangled shell of metal and scattered debris across hundreds of meters of asphalt, trapping several passengers inside the wreckage.

FRSC officials, local police officers, and good Samaritans rushed to the scene to extract trapped victims using heavy rescue tools and hydraulic cutters. First responders confirmed five fatalities at the site of the crash due to severe traumatic injuries.

Emergency medical teams stabilized 18 survivors, who suffered varying degrees of injuries ranging from severe fractures to head trauma. Ambulances transported the wounded to nearby medical facilities, including the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital, where several remain in critical condition. Traffic officers worked for hours to clear the wreckage, towing the crushed vehicles off the carriageway and reopening the highway to gridlocked motorists late in the afternoon.

Federal road safety authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation into the precise cause of the crash, examining mechanical failure and road conditions as contributing factors. Officials reiterated strict warnings to commercial drivers and fleet operators regarding mandatory vehicle maintenance, load limits, and speed adherence to prevent further tragic losses on major transit routes.
