Panama City, Panama— Two people were killed and five injured in a head-on car collision on the Inter-American Highway on October 16, 2026, and the crash left both vehicles crushed against the concrete divider. The road was blocked. Traffic stretched for kilometers.
The National Police Transit Division said the collision occurred near the Penonomé area in Coclé Province. A sedan traveling toward Panama City crossed the center line and struck an oncoming SUV. Both vehicles spun. Debris covered 50 meters. Fuel leaked.
Paramedics from the Fire Department and SUME 911 responded with three ambulances. Two passengers in the sedan died inside the car. The drivers of both vehicles and three other occupants were taken to Aquilino Tejeira Hospital with fractures and head injuries. One is critical.
A truck driver who witnessed the crash said, "The car came into our lane. It swerved to overtake and did not return. The SUV had no chance." Police have not confirmed that version. They are reviewing tire marks and dashcam footage from a following bus.
La Prensa reported that the Inter-American Highway remains Panama's deadliest corridor, with head-on collisions frequent on two-lane stretches that lack medians. Speeding and unsafe overtaking are leading causes. Night driving raises risk, but this crash occurred in daylight.
A transit investigator at the scene said, "We are collecting evidence for improper invasion of lane. We will also check if fatigue or distraction contributed." He said toxicology tests were ordered for both drivers. Results are pending.
The highway was closed for two and a half hours while crews removed wreckage and cleaned oil. Long lines of trucks and buses waited. Passengers got off and walked. The heat was intense.
The Public Ministry opened a file for negligent homicide. It will inspect both vehicles and interview survivors once stabilized. The road was reopened with speed warnings.
Families of the dead arrived at the hospital morgue by evening. The names have not been released pending notification. The highway returned to normal flow.
