Deadly Crowd Crush in India: Religious Festival Stampede Leaves 19 Dead, 25 Devotees Hospitalized Overnight

Varanasi, India— A devastating crowd stampede at a religious venue during a major festival claimed 19 lives and injured 25 devotees on October 24, 2026, after thousands pushed toward a narrow entrance at the same moment.

The crush happened around 10:40 a.m. at a temple courtyard in northern India where an estimated 15,000 people had gathered for morning prayers. Police said a temporary barricade collapsed near the sanctum, causing a sudden surge. Devotees fell on stone steps slick with water and flower offerings. Those behind kept moving forward.

Nineteen people were declared dead at district hospitals by midday, including 11 women and three children. Twenty-five others were admitted with fractures, chest injuries and suffocation. Four remain in critical condition. Officials said most victims were from neighboring districts who had traveled overnight by bus.

"We were chanting, then people started falling. There was no space to breathe," a 34-year-old survivor said from a hospital bed, his leg in a cast. "Someone shouted that the gate was closing. Everyone ran. My sister was pulled under."

The temple trust had deployed about 60 private guards and 40 police officers for crowd control, far fewer than the 300 personnel recommended in a 2022 safety audit. Loudspeakers failed 20 minutes before the crush, leaving no way to issue warnings. CCTV footage shows a bottleneck at a 3-meter-wide passage that served as both entry and exit.

District officials ordered a magisterial inquiry and suspended two local officers for alleged lapses. The chief minister announced compensation of 500,000 rupees to families of the dead and 100,000 to the injured. Opposition leaders called the response inadequate and demanded a judicial probe into temple safety standards nationwide.

Eyewitnesses said ambulances took more than 30 minutes to reach the site because access roads were blocked by parked vehicles and food stalls. Devotees carried the injured on blankets and wooden planks. A local doctor who was praying inside said he performed CPR on the temple floor. "There was no medical post inside. We used temple water to clean wounds," he said.

Festivals of this scale have seen repeated fatal crushes in India, with more than 400 deaths recorded at religious gatherings in the past decade. Experts cite narrow lanes, poor exit planning, and a failure to enforce capacity limits. The National Disaster Management Authority issued guidelines in 2023, but compliance remains patchy.

By evening, police were clearing the temple complex and asking pilgrims to return to their villages. Family members lined up outside the morgue, holding photographs. The temple bells, which rang continuously through the morning, had fallen silent, and officials said the festival will remain closed for two days.
