Deadly Crash in Stirling: Piper Tomahawk II Aircraft Crashes Near Drymen, Two Killed Instantly

Drymen, United Kingdom— A Piper Tomahawk II light aircraft crashed in fields near Drymen in Stirling, Scotland on October 20, killing both people on board and triggering a major emergency response.

The aircraft was on a local flight from a nearby airfield when it went down just after 11 a.m. Witnesses in the village reported hearing the engine sputter, then silence. One farmer saw the plane drop sharply and disappear behind a line of trees. He called 999.

Police Scotland and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service reached the site within 30 minutes. The wreckage was found in boggy farmland about two miles east of Drymen, near the edge of Loch Lomond National Park. Both occupants were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities have not been released pending formal identification and notification of families.

The Piper PA-38 Tomahawk II is a two-seat training aircraft widely used by flying schools. It is known for its T-tail design. Aviation sources said the aircraft was operating under visual flight rules. Weather at the time was overcast with low cloud and light winds. Investigators will examine whether conditions played a role.

Drymen is a small village popular with hikers on the West Highland Way. The crash site was cordoned off with a 200-meter exclusion zone. Local roads were closed. A resident said police told her not to approach because of leaking fuel. "We heard sirens for an hour," she said. "They kept going back and forth to the field."

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch has deployed a team to Stirling. A spokesperson said inspectors will recover the wreckage, examine the engine and flight controls, and review maintenance logs and pilot records. A preliminary report is expected within days. The Civil Aviation Authority said it is assisting.

Flight schools in central Scotland grounded Tomahawk flights pending further information, a precautionary move. One instructor who flies the type said the aircraft is generally reliable but requires careful handling in stalls. "It is an honest trainer," he said. "But like any old aircraft, it needs constant maintenance."

The crash is the second fatal light aircraft accident in Scotland this year. AAIB data shows a rise in general aviation incidents linked to aging training fleets. The investigation will also look at the aircraft's recent service history and whether it had any reported defects.

The field remains sealed. Investigators are expected to remain on site through the night. Recovery of the aircraft will take place once documentation is complete.
