Deadly Bus Crash Near Wroclaw: Intercity Bus Overturns on Icy Highway, Two Dead, Fourteen Injured

Wrocław, Poland— An intercity bus overturned on an icy stretch of highway near Wrocław on October 20, killing two passengers and injuring 14 others after the driver lost control on black ice and the bus slid into a ditch.

The accident occurred at around 6:30 a.m. on the A8 motorway bypass near Wrocław, on a bridge that had frozen overnight. The bus, traveling from Wrocław to Katowice with 30 passengers, hit a patch of ice. The driver braked, the bus jackknifed, then overturned onto its side. Passengers were thrown inside. Windows shattered. Luggage fell onto people.

Two passengers, a woman aged 61 and a man aged 54, died at the scene. Fourteen injured were taken to hospitals in Wrocław. Doctors said three have serious injuries, including spinal fractures. Others have cuts and bruises. One passenger said, "We were all asleep. Suddenly we were sliding sideways. Then everything turned over. People were screaming."

The road had been flagged for icing. The General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways said salt trucks had treated the road at 4 a.m., but temperatures dropped to minus 3 degrees, and a thin layer of ice reformed. The bridge is known for freezing before other sections. A road maintenance worker said, "Bridges freeze first. We tell drivers, but they don't slow down."

Bus accidents on icy roads are common in Poland in October, when temperatures fluctuate. Many intercity buses use summer tires until November. The bus company said this bus had winter tires and had passed inspection last week. The driver, with 15 years of experience, tested negative for alcohol. Police said speed may have been a factor. The speed limit on the bypass is 120 kilometers per hour. The bus was reportedly traveling at 100.

The highway was closed for four hours while firefighters righted the bus and removed wreckage. Traffic was diverted via local roads, causing long jams. The prosecutor's office opened an investigation into the cause and whether road maintenance was adequate. The bus company said it will cooperate and provide assistance to families.

Relatives gathered at the hospital and at the bus company's office in Wrocław. The company said it will provide psychological support to survivors. The two dead passengers have been identified and families notified. The bus has been towed to a police depot for inspection.

Icy conditions are expected to continue tonight. Drivers have been warned to reduce speed.
