Deadly Amur Bomber Crash: Russian Strategic Tu-95 Goes Down During Flight Training

BELOGORSK, RUSSIA — A Russian Tu-95 strategic bomber crashed on Wednesday morning during a scheduled training flight in the Far Eastern Amur region, killing six crew members and leaving another severely injured, according to officials from the Ministry of Defense.

The long-range, four-engine turboprop bomber—a core component of Russia’s air-based nuclear triad—went down in a unpopulated forest area roughly 80 kilometers (50 miles) northwest of Belogorsk. Emergency search and rescue crews dispatched to the site located the wreckage and confirmed the fatalities, while one surviving crew member was airlifted to a regional military hospital in critical condition.

Preliminary reports indicate that a major mechanical malfunction caused the fatal crash shortly after takeoff from a local airbase.

According to initial statement fragments released by defense officials, the flight crew encountered an engine fire in one of the aircraft's four massive Kuznetsov NK-12 turboprop engines, which rapidly spread during a low-altitude climb.

All seven personnel on board were accounted for following the crash in a densely forested, unpopulated zone of the Amur region. The incident left six crew members confirmed dead and one critically injured, with preliminary findings pointing to a catastrophic engine failure and localized fire as the primary cause.

Ground control lost radar contact with the aircraft minutes after pilot transmissions indicated an attempt to perform an emergency jettison of fuel and divert back to base. Emergency responders worked through dense forest terrain to contain a localized fire resulting from fuel ignition upon impact.

A special commission headed by the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Aerospace Forces has been dispatched to the crash site to lead the formal investigation and retrieve the aircraft's flight data recorders ("black boxes").

In response to the incident, military authorities announced the temporary suspension of all Tu-95 flight training operations across the country pending preliminary findings into the failure mechanism.

The Tu-95, known within NATO under the reporting name "Bear," first entered service during the Soviet era in the 1950s but remains a mainstay of Russia's strategic deterrence fleet following extensive modernization. Accidents involving the aging strategic fleet are relatively rare but have previously drawn scrutiny regarding operational strain and ongoing maintenance protocols.

Local authorities confirmed that because the bomber crashed in an uninhabited sector, no casualties or damage to civilian infrastructure were reported on the ground.
