Daniel Ortega Says Nicaragua Elections Will No Longer Be Held

Nicaragua’s President Daniel Ortega said the country will no longer hold elections. Speaking during celebrations marking the 47th anniversary of the Sandinista revolution, Ortega said there would “be no more elections here” in which parties could try to seize government or power. He said laws would be drafted to stop what he described as “coup plotters and traitors” from returning to influence. Ortega has ruled continuously since 2007 and earlier constitutional changes have extended his term, with the next vote previously scheduled for 2027.
