Da Nang Road Tragedy: Motorbike Crash Kills Two Riders, Police Cite Speed on Coastal Curve

Da Nang, Vietnam— Two people were killed early Saturday when a motorbike crashed on a coastal road in Da Nang, one of Vietnam's most traveled scenic routes.

The accident happened at around 4:50 a.m. local time on Vo Nguyen Giap Street, the coastal highway linking Da Nang to Hoi An. The motorbike, carrying two young men, was heading south. It hit a curve near the Son Tra Peninsula turnoff, left the lane, and struck a concrete divider. Both riders were thrown more than 20 meters.

Traffic police said neither rider was wearing a helmet that was fastened. The bike was heavily damaged. The impact left debris spread over 30 meters. No other vehicles were involved. Speed is believed to be a factor.

The victims were identified as two men aged 22 and 23 from Quang Nam Province. They worked as hotel staff in Da Nang. Colleagues said they had finished a night shift and were heading home. The road was empty at that hour. Street lights were on, but the curve is known for accidents.

"That stretch is deceptive. It looks straight, then it bends sharply," a traffic officer at the scene said. The officer noted that the coastal road has seen a rise in early-morning crashes as tourism traffic grows. The city added rumble strips last year, but not on this curve.

Da Nang has one of the highest motorbike ownership rates in Vietnam. The coastal road is popular with riders for its sea views, but also for speeding. Police data shows 18 fatalities on Vo Nguyen Giap in the past 12 months, most involving motorbikes.

Rescue crews arrived at 5:10 a.m. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene. Their bodies were taken to Da Nang General Hospital for examination. The motorbike has been impounded for technical inspection.

The city traffic safety committee said it will review signage and lighting on the curve. Officials are urging riders to slow down and wear helmets correctly.

An investigation into speed and road conditions continues.
