Global and national health bodies now warn that measles, despite decades of progress, is making a dangerous comeback. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), recent data show a sharp rise in measles cases worldwide — with infections rising in 2024 and 2025 after years of decline, especially in places where routine immunization dropped.
In the Americas, for example, dozens of countries that once enjoyed elimination status are now seeing spikes in confirmed cases. The consequences are not trivial. Measles is among the most contagious diseases known: a single infected individual can infect a dozen or more others. Once in motion, outbreaks can spread rapidly through communities — especially those under-immunized — and lead to serious complications: pneumonia, brain inflammation, blindness, long-term disability, or even death.
In 2025 in the United States, for instance, health authorities have reported a surge in confirmed measles cases — among the highest seen in decades. Public-health professionals warn that if the spread continues, the country could lose its “elimination status” — a meaningful benchmark that stood for decades.
Holiday travel and increased mobility make the problem even more urgent. As people cross domestic and international borders, the likelihood of importation — and thus renewed chains of transmission — grows.
