Heraklion, Greece— A sudden earth tremor caused a wall collapse in Crete on October 31, 2026, injuring two locals and sending residents into the streets of the old town.
The tremor hit at 11:14 a.m. local time. The Geodynamic Institute in Athens said it measured magnitude 4.8, with epicenter 12 kilometers west of Heraklion at shallow depth. It lasted about six seconds. That was enough. In the old Venetian quarter, a stone wall that was already cracked gave way.
Fire service said two people were injured. One was a 74-year-old man struck by falling masonry while walking through a narrow alley near the Morosini Fountain. The other was a shopkeeper in her 40s hit by plaster inside her store. Both were taken to Venizeleio Hospital. Their injuries were not life-threatening.
The wall belonged to an abandoned two-story building. It collapsed onto the alley, blocking passage. Dust filled the street. Cafe chairs toppled. Tourists ran. One waiter said glasses fell off shelves. He thought a truck had hit the building.
Municipal engineers inspected nearby structures. They found cracks in three other old buildings. Those buildings were evacuated. Tape was put up. Residents were told not to return until checks were done. The mayor said the old town’s masonry is vulnerable. Many buildings are centuries old and never retrofitted.
The tremor was felt across central Crete, from Rethymno to Agios Nikolaos. No tsunami warning was issued. The Institute said aftershocks were possible in the next hours. It recorded two small aftershocks of magnitude 2.9 and 3.1 by afternoon. People were nervous.
Greece sits on active faults. Crete has been hit by larger quakes before. A 6.0 quake in 2021 killed one and damaged hundreds of homes. Since then, building inspections have been slow. Owners of old buildings often cannot afford repairs.
Tourism was disrupted briefly. Cruise passengers were ashore when the tremor hit. They gathered in the main square. Some left early. Shop owners closed for an hour to check stock. By early afternoon, most shops reopened.
By evening, the alley remained blocked. A small excavator was brought in to clear rubble. The two injured were stable. Seismologists said they were watching.
