Crans Montana Disaster: Forty One Casualties Confirmed In Massive New Year Bar Blaze Tragedy

Crans-Montana, Switzerland—A devastating fire tore through the crowded Le Constellation lounge during New Year celebrations, killing forty-one people and leaving more than one hundred fifteen others injured. The blaze erupted less than two hours after midnight inside the multi-level entertainment venue, which was packed with young tourists and international seasonal visitors. The rapid progression of the fire triggered a massive flashover, trapping dozens of patrons inside the basement nightclub area.

Initial investigation reports suggest that the fire started when indoor sparklers attached to champagne bottles ignited non-fireproofed acoustic foam panels on the ceiling. Within ten seconds of the initial spark, a massive fire blast swept horizontally across the room, filling the exit corridors with thick black smoke. Panicked patrons scrambled toward a single narrow staircase, causing a severe crowd surge that blocked the primary escape route.

"The scene turned into absolute chaos within seconds as the ceiling literally melted onto the crowd below," said local rescue coordinator Christian Brenzikofer. "Many individuals had to smash thick plexiglas windows using heavy metal chairs just to draw air." Eighty-three of the survivors are currently undergoing treatment for severe thermal burns covering more than sixty percent of their bodies.

The Valais cantonal police deployed forty ambulances and ten emergency helicopters to transport the influx of critically injured victims to specialist burn units across northern Italy, France, and Switzerland. The Swiss Disaster Victim Identification team established a temporary mortuary near the resort center to collect DNA samples, fingerprints, and dental records. The identification process has been severely hampered because many personal identification documents were destroyed in the intense heat.

Swiss President Guy Parmelin declared five days of national mourning, calling the incident one of the worst infrastructure tragedies in the modern history of the Alpine region. The two managers of the venue have been detained for questioning regarding the building’s maximum capacity limits and the use of unapproved pyrotechnics indoors. Regional prosecutors have initiated an official criminal probe into potential negligent homicide and building code violations.

Witnesses outside the establishment described seeing desperate parents rushing to the cordoned zone to find their teenage children. More than half of the confirmed deceased are under the age of eighteen, including several foreign nationals from France, Italy, and Serbia. The regional hospital in Sion quickly reached its maximum capacity, forcing medical staff to treat minor injuries in the parking lot.

Fire experts noted that the horizontal configuration of the interior insulation foam allowed the flames to travel unchecked from the bar area to the main entrance doors. The local municipality has suspended all scheduled indoor entertainment events across the ski resort until independent safety audits are completed. Volunteers from the Swiss Red Cross are providing psychological counseling to the surviving staff and victims' families.

Structural engineers are currently using specialized props to stabilize the remaining wooden framework of the building to prevent a secondary collapse.

Forensic teams will continue excavating the basement level of the lounge to ensure all human remains have been recovered from the ash.
