The rapid progression of the fire triggered a massive flashover, trapping dozens of patrons inside the basement nightclub area.

Initial investigation reports suggest that the fire started when indoor sparklers attached to champagne bottles ignited non-fireproofed acoustic foam panels on the ceiling. Within ten seconds of the initial spark, a massive fire blast swept horizontally across the room, filling the exit corridors with thick black smoke. Panicked patrons scrambled toward a single narrow staircase, causing a severe crowd surge that blocked the primary escape route.
