Countdown at the Checkout: Gifts, Deadlines and a Store in Flux

The bright colours and familiar mascots that once greeted children and parents alike in Toys ‘R’ Us Canada stores are now caught up in a countdown. The toy retailer has filed for creditor protection in an Ontario court, and with that step comes a narrowing window to use the gift cards many families have tucked away. Customers holding physical and digital gift cards have been told they may only be honoured for a short period — roughly 14 days from the company’s filing — before the opportunity to redeem them disappears.

For decades, Toys ‘R’ Us held a special place in childhood memories, its aisles filled with everything from dolls to building blocks. But as shifting consumer habits, competition from online retailers, rising costs and mounting financial losses took their toll, the Canadian division sought protection under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act, part of an effort to restructure rather than collapse outright. Stores that remain open will continue normal operations for now, but the future of many locations remains uncertain.

Gift cards — once a flexible way to pay — have become a pressing deadline for shoppers. With the company’s online store reportedly offline, redemption largely requires an in-person visit to one of the few remaining stores before the mid-February deadline around February 16. Beyond that, it isn’t clear whether cards not used by then will retain value once the creditor protection period ends and any future restructuring moves forward.

The situation spotlights a broader dilemma when beloved retailers face financial distress: stored value that feels as good as cash can quickly lose its usability when legal protections kick in. For families with gift cards received over birthdays, holidays or special occasions, the ticking clock adds urgency to what was once leisure spending. In the uncertain terrain of retail restructures, every card’s expiry date becomes a reminder of how fragile such value can be when businesses falter.
