“Connecting Horizons: Ethiopian Airlines Unveils New Route to Lyon”

In the rhythm of global travel, new flight routes often mark more than just added lines on a map — they open journeys, foster connections, and bridge cultures across continents. Today comes one such development as Ethiopian Airlines announces an expansion of its network into southeastern France, offering travellers fresh access between Africa and one of Europe’s most dynamic cities.

Ethiopian Airlines has confirmed plans to launch a new thrice‑weekly passenger service linking Addis Ababa with Lyon, France, beginning on 2 July 2026. The route will operate via Geneva, Switzerland, and is scheduled to depart on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays using the airline’s modern Airbus A350‑900 aircraft — a fuel‑efficient wide‑body jet that supports long‑haul connectivity. This expansion further strengthens Ethiopian’s presence in the French market, where it already serves Paris and Marseille.

The addition of Lyon — France’s third‑largest metropolitan area and a renowned hub of gastronomy, industry and culture — reflects Ethiopian Airlines’ continued strategy to bolster its European footprint while enhancing passenger options for travel between continents. A stop in Geneva also provides Swiss travellers smoother connections into African destinations and beyond through Ethiopian’s extensive network.

Group CEO Mesfin Tasew said the new service underscores France’s long‑standing importance in Ethiopian’s global network, noting that the airline has maintained links to the country for more than five decades. He highlighted that the route will support trade, tourism and people‑to‑people ties while offering passengers seamless access to more than 65 destinations across Africa and additional global points via the carrier’s Addis Ababa hub.

For travellers, the Lyon service means enhanced options for both business and leisure travel. The connection adds to European linkages that help facilitate economic exchange, cultural engagement and tourism between Africa and France’s Rhône‑Alpes region.

As Ethiopian Airlines expands its route network into Lyon in mid‑2026, the move represents more than incremental growth. It signals ongoing confidence in Europe‑Africa travel demand and underlines the airline’s role as an aviation bridge between regions. With expanded connectivity, passengers gain greater flexibility and choice — a testament to how international aviation continues to evolve in a post‑pandemic world.
