Dortmund, Germany—Federal police and railway emergency teams responded to a rail corridor outside Dortmund on Wednesday morning after a regional commuter train struck an obstruction on the tracks and derailed at low speed, leaving four passengers with minor injuries.
The incident occurred at 8:40 a.m. as the regional train carrying approximately 120 passengers approached a suburban junction. The leading bogie of the front carriage struck a heavy metallic object lying on the track bed, forcing the wheels off the steel rails.
The train operator immediately engaged emergency brakes, bringing the train to a halt within seventy yards as the front carriage tilted slightly against the gravel ballast bed. Passengers inside experienced a violent jolt, causing several individuals to be thrown against seats and handrails.
First responders and federal police officers arrived on scene within ten minutes to coordinate the evacuation of the stranded passengers. Emergency personnel assisted occupants down emergency ladders, guiding them along the track enclosure to an assembly point at a nearby station.
Paramedics evaluated dozens of passengers at a mobile triage post. Four individuals received treatment for minor contusions, whiplash, and abrasions, with two being transferred to a regional clinic for routine medical assessment.
Federal Police officers sealed off the rail section to initiate a technical investigation into the origin of the track obstruction. Investigators gathered physical debris from the rails and inspected the damaged undercarriage of the lead locomotive.
Deutsche Bahn suspended regional rail service along the affected commuter branch line, dispatching replacement bus fleets to transport stranded travelers. Heavy re-railing cranes arrived at the site before noon to lift the lead carriage wheels back onto the steel track.
Federal law enforcement officials confirmed that forensic specialists are examining whether the obstruction was dropped intentionally or fell from a passing freight transport.
