WELLINGTON, NZ — A Saturday evening commute turned into a scene of panic and destruction after a passenger train partially derailed on Wellington’s Johnsonville Line near Cashmere Avenue in Khandallah. The serious incident has left multiple people injured and completely halted rail services across the network.
Emergency services rushed to the tracks just north of Khandallah Station after multiple frantic calls were placed shortly after 7:00 PM on Saturday, June 6, 2026.
Local residents living alongside the steep suburban line reported hearing a massive impact that vibrated through the surrounding neighborhood.
"I heard a huge short boom," Wellington City Councilor Diane Calvert told reporters, describing the immediate aftermath as emergency services began pouring into the area.
Another nearby resident, who asked to remain anonymous, recalled the terrifying sequence of events: "We heard a loud bang at around 7:05 PM that literally shook our house. When I looked out from the balcony, I could see the train crumpled and at a complete standstill. Then I heard shouting and what sounded like someone in severe pain, which is when I immediately called emergency services."
The resident's father was among the first on the scene to check on trapped commuters before first responders arrived.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) crews from the Johnsonville and Porirua stations arrived swiftly to secure the unstable wreckage and initiate a rescue operation. "All passengers were removed from the train with FENZ's assistance," a spokesperson confirmed.
Wellington Free Ambulance deployed six operational units to the scene to triage the victims. Officials have confirmed that eight patients have been treated and transported to Wellington City Hospital. Their injuries range from minor to serious.
The cause of the derailment remains unconfirmed as technical investigators head to the site. Early unverified reports from commuters suggest a potential infrastructure or tracking mechanism failure near Khandallah Station, which caused the train to run off the main tracks and crumple.
Following the derailment, Metlink officially halted all train services on the Johnsonville Line "until further notice" and began sourcing emergency replacement buses for stranded commuters. Local police established strict cordons around the crash site, blocking access at Box Hill and Station Road. Motorists and pedestrians are heavily urged to completely avoid the Khandallah Station area while heavy emergency machinery operates.
An official safety investigation will be launched to determine exactly how the passenger carriage lost its tracks.
