Lagos, Nigeria— A commercial bus collided with a tanker in Lagos on November 1, 2026, killing nine passengers and injuring several others in a fiery crash on one of the city's busiest expressways.
The crash happened around 6 a.m. on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near the Otedola Bridge area. The bus, a 14-seater danfo, was heading toward the island. The tanker, carrying diesel, was slowing for traffic. The bus reportedly attempted to overtake and struck the tanker's rear.
The impact ruptured the tanker's valve. Fuel spilled onto the road. The bus caught fire. Passengers inside could not escape quickly because the door was jammed. Bystanders pulled three people out before flames engulfed the vehicle.
"Nine bodies were recovered from the bus. They were burnt beyond recognition. We are working to identify them through manifest and family contacts," a Federal Road Safety Corps official said at the scene. He said the tanker driver survived and fled on foot.
Lagos highway crashes are frequent. Commercial buses are often poorly maintained, overloaded, and driven by tired drivers working long shifts. Tankers carrying fuel share the same lanes with little separation. Enforcement is sporadic.
Traffic was halted for more than four hours. The fire service sprayed foam to contain diesel. The road surface was damaged by heat. Crowds gathered and police struggled to keep them back. Looting of spilled goods was reported at the edges.
Survivors were taken to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital. Two are in critical condition with burns. One survivor said the bus was speeding and the driver had been warned twice by passengers to slow down. That account is not yet confirmed.
FRSC said it will review the bus company's safety records and driver licensing. The agency has launched Operation Safe Roads ahead of the festive season but says compliance remains low.
Families arrived at the hospital morgue late Saturday. Officials said DNA testing may be needed for identification. The tanker company said it will cooperate with investigators and provide compensation information.
The expressway reopened at midday but with heavy congestion. Authorities urged drivers to maintain safe distance from tankers and avoid night travel where possible.
