Climate scientists issue a sobering diagnosis about Earth’s “vital signs”

An international team’s annual climate assessment finds that seven of 16 key indicators have reached record extremes. Atmospheric carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide are at record highs, while ocean heat, sea-level rise and ice loss are worsening. The researchers say global warming appears to be accelerating and warn that Earth’s life-support systems are being pushed beyond stable limits. They point to possible tipping points, including disruption to Atlantic circulation and irreversible damage to the Amazon. Rapid emissions cuts and adaptation could still reduce the risks.
