Clashes Erupt in Janzour, Western Tripoli, Sparking Property Damage and Chaos

JANZOUR, Libya — Intense fighting broke out late Thursday (February 12, 2026) night in the Janzour district west of Tripoli between rival armed units, leaving neighborhoods shaken, property damaged, and panic among residents before calm was restored.

The clashes reportedly occurred between fighters from the Sixth Support Force and personnel of the 137th Infantry Battalion, both affiliated with the Western Coastal Military Zone. Tensions escalated after the arrest of a Sixth Support Force commander earlier in the day, prompting an exchange of gunfire throughout several parts of Janzour.

Residents described a chaotic scene of gunshots echoing across streets, forcing families to shelter indoors as security forces attempted to contain the violence. Several people were reportedly injured, and both public and private property suffered damage amid the overnight confrontation.

Local security units eventually intervened, separating the opposing sides and restoring relative calm by Friday evening. Security forces were deployed across the area to prevent further clashes and reassure frightened residents.

In a strongly worded statement, the General Staff of the Libyan Army condemned the violence as a breach of law and military order, emphasizing that such actions violate directives intended to protect civilians and their property. The statement pledged to hold those responsible accountable and deployed regular forces to stabilize the area.

Although no detailed official figures on casualties or the full extent of material losses have been released, social media footage and eyewitness accounts suggest significant harm to homes and other structures in the affected districts. Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to ensure continued security.

The clashes in Janzour reflect ongoing security challenges around Libya’s capital, where rival armed groups continue to vie for influence amid a fragile peace.
