Chrome Finally Talks Sideways: Enter the Era of Vertical Tabs

For years, Google Chrome users have envied the vertical-tab layouts offered by browsers like Edge, Firefox, Brave, and Vivaldi. Those competitors let you stack your tabs on the side — a design that feels cleaner, more organized, and especially useful when you’re juggling dozens of open pages. Now, Google seems to have finally heard the user base: Chrome is testing vertical tabs in its Canary (development) version for desktop.

This change may look subtle, but for many it’s deeply practical. Right-clicking on the traditional horizontal tab bar now gives you the option to “Show tabs to the side,” switching everything to a vertical sidebar. Once there, you’ll see your tabs stacked, grouped, and searchable — all without sacrificing the familiar elements like adding a new tab or collapsing the list. Want to go back? Just right-click again and choose to revert to horizontal mode.

Why does this matter? Because modern work and browsing often involve too many tabs. With vertical tabs, you get more screen real estate for your content, without constantly reaching for the scroll-bar. It’s not just a cosmetic tweak — it changes how you navigate the web. And it’s a feature that many browsers offered years ago, making Google’s move feel overdue, but welcome.

This isn’t the only upgrade in Chrome’s pipeline. On the more futuristic side, Google is also folding its Gemini AI directly into Chrome. The new Gemini button lets users summon an AI assistant that can summarize, search across tabs, and even help schedule tasks with Google apps like Calendar or YouTube. AI Mode in the omnibox (Chrome’s address bar) is also being introduced, letting people ask complex, conversational questions — not just standard search queries.

Plus, Google is pushing a smarter and safer browser. With AI, Chrome can now detect scammy notifications and strip away notification permissions for sites you never interact with. On top of that, if Chrome detects that a saved password is compromised, it may help you change it in one click on supported sites.

Taken together, these updates signal a shift: Chrome is no longer just chasing speed or simplicity. It’s trying to be more intelligent, more context-aware, and more respectful of how people actually use their browsers. The vertical tabs represent a small but meaningful nod to power users; the AI features point toward a future where your browser can act more like a thoughtful assistant than a static tool.

In the end, Google is acknowledging: yes, users have been asking for these changes. And maybe, finally, those requests are starting to be answered.
