China’s military has promoted two senior People’s Liberation Army (PLA) officers to the rank of general, a move seen as part of preparations to reorganize the top leadership structure after the thinning of ranks caused by a long-running anti-corruption drive.
At a ceremony in Beijing on Friday, Xi Jinping—who also heads the Central Military Commission—presented orders promoting Zhang Shuguang and Wang Gang.
Zhang Shuguang was also named head of the Central Military Commission’s division investigating corruption, reinforcing his role in the military’s top anti-graft apparatus. Wang Gang was promoted as commander of the PLA Air Force.
The promotions are also viewed as potential steps toward filling vacancies on the seven-member Central Military Commission, which has been reduced to two serving members due to corruption investigations and removals.
